Where did the idea for Mem’s Cookie Kitchen come from?

Mem’s Cookie Kitchen started as a fun way to make a little extra money and spend more time with my family that suddenly blossomed into a small business. Each year for the holidays my family makes, let’s just say, a disproportionate number of cookies compared to the number of people there are. Sugar cookies are always in the mix. As fate, destiny, kismet, whatever you want to call it would have it, I happened to have some extra time on my hands and nominated myself to do the sugar cookies.

Years prior, I attended The French Pastry School in Chicago and worked as a Pastry Chef, so while it was not out of the norm for me to bake, it had been some time since I baked cookies from scratch. I spent some time tweaking family recipes until I found the perfect one – kid and husband approved.

I took extra care in decorating as I wanted them to be a bit fancier than in years past and I thought the final product turned out pretty darn cute. Feeling emboldened, I posted them to social media. So many friends and family suggested I sell them, and soon I started to believe it! I summoned up some courage and posted them to our neighborhood page. The rest is history.

What’s the most creative, fun, or unique cookie design you’ve made for a wedding?

My favorite wedding cookies have to be a custom set I did for a bride whose wedding was located at her soon-to-be family’s ranch. She wanted the cookies to be glamorous with a country feel that included the family brand. I love when customers want me to create something one of a kind that goes against traditional sensibilities and drives me to get creative. This set did all that and more.

It was so fulfilling to be able to create a one-of-a-kind cookie to celebrate their big day that was designed around something so heartfelt. That is why I love making custom wedding cookies. I love how making something so small, like a cookie, can have so much meaning to a customer.

What makes your cookies stand out?

Most of the time, when you buy sugar cookies, you’re buying something that was made a long time ago with not-so-great ingredients, lots of preservatives, and that likely traveled a long way to get to you. Our wedding cookies are small-batch, use premium ingredients, have no preservatives, and are made right here in your backyard. We combine our delicious cookie dough with royal icing and decorate each cookie by hand. They are almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Do you have any advice for couples who want to make sure their wedding is fun and engaging for their guests?

My advice would be to be true to who you are. If your wedding celebrates things that you love in the ceremony, the food, the music, the people, you’re going to have fun and in turn, your guests will too.
